An excellent strong Belgian ale, released in 1989 to mark the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, is a very popular drink in many countries around the world. The beer is produced by secondary fermentation. Thanks to the use of three types of hops in the beer — Saaz, Brewers Gold, and Amarillo — the drink has an exquisite aromatic bouquet with notes of herbs and citrus and a complex taste with a noticeable hop bitterness.

Beer brewing began in the Belgian town of Appelhook as early as 1654. The local brewery became the progenitor of the future famous Hoegaarden brewery. In 1906, Leon Hoega, who had settled here, bought the brewery and renamed it “Brouwerij-Mouterij den Appel.” After World War I, the brewery needed to be renovated, and Leon Hoega decided to build a new building for the brewery, where it is still located today.

By the end of the 1980s, Delirium Tremens and La Guillotine had been added to the brewery's lineup. In 1992, the Confrerie of the Pink Elephant was founded with the aim of promoting Delirium beer and other beer varieties. The brewery also bought the Campus brewery and the monastery breweries St. Idesbald, Vieux Viers and Dami. In 1993, the Floris line of fruit beers was launched.
